The Kalamazoo Eagles High School Varsity Hockey team lost to the Lakeshore St Joe (LSJ) Warriors 4-1 at Wings West Arena Friday night in a non-league game.
The Warriors started the game fast, pressuring and outshooting the Eagles 18-6 in the first period. With the Eagles short-handed 5 on 4 killing a minor penalty, another minor penalty was assessed giving the Warriors a 5 on 3 power play chance for a little over a minute. However, the Eagles and goal tender Drake Witt stood tall preventing any scoring and the period ended with the score tied at 0.
Just 18 seconds into the second period, Nico Linares put in a rebounded shot to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Benjamin Whitesell scored next for the Warriors, launching a hard on ice shot from the point that found its way by several players and between the skates of the screened Eagles goalie. The second period ended with a 2-0 Warriors advantage.
Continuing to apply offensive zone pressure, CJ Bryant found himself with the puck in front of the Eagles net and buried a shot just over a minute into the third period giving the Warriors a 3-0 lead. The Eagles were able to take advantage of a 2 on 1 break away midway through the third period. Zach Pernie was able to scoop up a rebounded shot and bounce it past Warriors goalie Anthony Miceli cutting the Eagles deficit to 3-1.
Later in the third, during a scrum in front of the Eagles net, an Eagles defensemen cleared a loose puck from the crease that had gotten behind the goalie. After a discussion between the referees and linesman, a penalty shot was awarded to the Warriors. Cole Kilboy was able to capitalize, extending the Warriors lead to 4-1 which would be the game final.
The Warriors face Kalamazoo United in non-league action on Saturday 1-13-2018. The Eagles resume league play against Portage Central at 5:15 on Wednesday 1-17-2018 at Wings West Arena.
