Portage Northern 5, Kalamazoo Eagles 0: Stanley, Kalleward lead Northern to win

Mitchell Kalleward and Matthew Stanley combined for four goals and three assists in Portage Northern’s 5-0 win over the Kalamazoo Eagles on Wednesday.

Grant Ernst put Northern on the board with a first period goal, followed by two goals from Kalleward (one in the second, one in the third). From there, Stanley took over by scoring the final two goals of the game in the third period.

Kalleward had two goals and two assists, while Stanley added two goals and one assist. Grant Ernst scored one goal, and Matty Seiferlein made three assists. Tim Fitzgerald made 20 saves to clinch the shutout.

Logan Thorne stopped 32 of 37 shots for the Eagles.

Portage northern faces Mattawan at 7:30 p.m. Jan 7th at Mattawan High School.

Kalamazoo Blades 5, Kalamazoo Eagles 4: Veeti Isojarvi buries overtime winner

Kalamazoo Blades’ Veeti Isojarvi scored the game-winning goal 59 seconds into overtime to lift his team to a 5-4 win against the Kalamazoo Eagles on Saturday.

Cody Hagen chased into the corner to play a deep puck and threw it at the net, and then Isojarvi netted the rebound.

“It was a heck of a game to watch,” Blades coach Tyler Eddy said. “Both teams hung in at the very end, and either team could have won the game.”

Valtteri Vuorimaa scored three goals, including back-to-back goals in the third period which put the Blades up 4-3. His second goal was on the power play from Hagen, and his third was unassisted on a penalty kill.

Kalamazoo Eagles 6, Mattawan 3: Jarrett Esman leads Eagles with hat trick

Jarrett Esman’s hat trick led the Kalamazoo Eagles to a 6-3 victory against Mattawan on Wednesday.

Kalamazoo Eagles athlete Blake Jarrett, Kevin Andrysiak and James Wressel scored one goal apiece. Trevor Wason had three assists, Kody Keller and Esman had two and Drew McPherson and Hunter Born had one each. Logan Thorne had 25 saves.

Mattawan’s Mitchell Dundore, Jake Larkin and Chaney Moore scored one goal each. Jake Davidson had two assists, while Brett Piche and Tyler Anderson had one apiece.

Kalamazoo Eagles led 3-0 after the first period, the result of a slow start for Mattawan, according to coach Mike May.

Jackson United Vikings 9, Kalamazoo Eagles 1: Matthew Stamler and Billy Bonser score hat tricks; Vikings stay perfect

Jackson United Vikings’ Matthew Stamler and Billy Bonser each recorded a hat trick in a 9-1 win over the Kalamazoo Eagles Friday at Lawson Ice Arena.

Jackson United led 3-0 after the first period, when John Griswold, Bonser and Stamler scored in the game’s opening period.

Stamler finished with four goals, including two in the third, while Bonser scored one in the second and third periods. Dalton Yoxheimer scored in the second period, while Brad Campbell made 18 saves.

Portage Central 4, Kalamazoo Eagles 2: Central scores twice in first period, early lead holds

Portage Central’s Davin Renda scored a power-play goal in the second period to go up 3-0, and Central held on to defeat the Kalamazoo Eagles 4-2 on Wednesday.

Renda’s scored from Max Mones and John Hayward at 14:43 in the second, and the power-play goal would hold as the game-winner.

Jack Sproule scored at 6:53 into the game, and Hayward scored from Jared Lutz 30 seconds later, giving Central the 2-0 lead at the first intermission.

“I think it’s important for us to have a good start,” Central coach Brian Bellware said. “They were both good pucks to the net. We got a good bounce on the first one, and had a nice play on the second one. Our goalie made two or three big saves in the first period and that gave us good momentum.”
